The Congregation of Cellitinnen sisters known in India as Augustinian sisters was founded to take care of the poor sick persons in Germany in 1838. The congregation is actively involved in medical services in different parts of India.

St. Augustine hospital in Kumily, Idukki was established in 1971, at a time when there was no proper road to High ranges from central Kerala. There was no proper conveyance and hardly any facilities. People were mainly migrants who fought with odd climates and malaria was rampant those days. The socio-economic, educational and developmental activities were hardly initiated

in this area. With the establishment of the hospital sisters extended their service to a vast area of Kumily since this is the only hospital within the limits of some 30 kilometres.

There are also different groups of tribal groups living in the rural areas of Kumily and around.

Our hospital, besides care of the patients in the hospital we also focus on awareness programs, free camps etc. Our hospital is known for its service to the poor. We give committed service to people who come to our hospital as well as those lying at home bed ridden. We also render our service to the terminally ill patients in our palliative care unit functioning in the hospital. Our hospital is a small hospital with sufficient equipment’s for diagnosis of infectious as well as non-communicable diseases in rural, semi-urban and urban areas of Kumily at affordable cost for the common people of many villages in and around Kumily.

The Hospital is committed to the uplift and empowerment of the various people: Sc’s tribes and poor, middle class and the rich living in this part of Kanjirapally diocese.

When we look and compare olden  days and present scenario we can see that the overall development of theses area  well changed. The living standard and health status and health facilities are improved. Got good transportation facilities and conveyance facilities also have improved.

At present we have the services of 24 hours’ causality, with well experienced doctors, ICU with ventilator, monitors and cardiac fibrilators. Well established Medical lab facilities, X-ray with digital facility, ECG. We have a dialysis unit with 6 machine and got 30 patients. We got the facility for TMT, Sonography, and CT scan.

At present we have 9 doctors:

 MD Physician - 2, Gynaecologist -1. Orthopaedic surgeon – 1, General Surgeon -1, Paediatrics -1, Anaesthetist -1 RMO – 4.

We have the service of Cardiologist and nephrologist visiting from Medicity, Pala
