The Congregation of the Sisters of the Imitation of Christ (SIC), or Bethany Sisters, was founded in 1925 by Servant of God Archbishop Geevarghese Mar Ivanios – the first Metropolitan Archbishop of the Syro- Malankara Catholic Church. Bethany is an active congregation lays emphasis on Sacred Liturgy, Prayer and Contemplation. The spiritual upliftment of the Catholic Church is the primary objective of the congregation. The congregation was raised to pontifical status in 1956. The congregation is growing now with five provinces such as Thiruvananthapuram, Thiruvalla, Bathery, Pathanamthitta and Moovattupuzha under one Mother General. The Generalate is situated at Kottayam, Kerala, India.

ACTIVITIES

BETHANY HOSPITAL, PUTHOOR

It is a 50 bedded primary medical Centre started in 1980 under the management of Bethany Sisters in the civil district of Kollam in Kerala State. It runs purely on a charitable basis. The hospital is located in a remote, underdeveloped area surrounded by villages. There are thousands of people depends on the hospital for their health care needs and the beneficiaries of the hospital are mainly cashew nut factory workers, fisher folks, Rubber tapping workers, agricultural labourers, peasants, quarry workers and other lower socio-economic and vulnerable sections of the society.

The hospital presently has the following specialty departments like Family medicine, Orthopedics (Visiting), Pain & Palliative and hospice care. The hospital renders health care services to 200 patients on daily basis. Sr. Dr. Athullya is available for 24hrs. Junior doctor is coming from  St. Johns Medical College, Bangalore for bond service.

Lab in charge Sr. Susmitha is giving training for poor students from nearby colleges as part of their lab training at free of cost.
